A Milestone Approaches: Official Retirement Age Rises to 66 Years in 2025
This decision was made ten years ago, and the first step is now just two months away: the legal retirement age is going up. Although this is not new, it is significant: from 2025, the official retirement age will increase from 65 to 66 years, and in 2030, it will rise to 67 years.
Although it’s not a sudden surprise, and the online pension portal mypension.be has accounted for it for some time, the Pension Service is specifically raising awareness of the change on Tuesday.
“We need to adopt a completely new mindset. For years, we spoke of retirement at 65; now it will be at 66,” they said. “Don’t simply assume you’ll be able to retire at 65 at the latest!”
To clarify, the legal retirement age depends on one’s birth date. For those born before 1960, it is set at 65 years. For those born between January 1, 1960, and December 31, 1963, it will be 66 years. For those born in 1964 or later, it will be 67 years.
Early retirement is still possible, with the same conditions applying based on years of career.
